Edinburgh Easter 2021: I tried a deep-fried Creme Egg and it was delicious

With Easter weekend now in full swing, you may be looking for some chocolatey snacks to enjoy over the coming days.

If you're a little bored of the classic Cadburys egg, we might have the snack that could be right up your street.

This week, Edinburgh Live nipped down to McLarens on the Corner in Bruntsfield to try none other than a deep fried Creme Egg, oh yes, you heard us right.

Named the sweet 'Scotch Egg', the chocolate itself is wrapped in a mixture of brownie and cookie dough, before being deep fried and dusted with sugar, drizzled in chocolate sauce and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

After hearing about what seems to be the most indulgent treat in the city, we headed down to try the latest battered creation that Scotland has to offer.

The egg is being served up at the restaurants Scranavan, which has been offering a host of different snacks and drinks during lockdown, from bubble waffles to takeaway cocktails.

Instantly on arrival, the smells coming from the van made us pretty sure the egg was going to be delicious as we waited in the Easter sunshine for it to be cooked.

Then after a short wait, we were handed the creation, and oh wow did it look good.

Served up in a much more flattering manner than a deep fried Mars bar, the Creme egg and melted brownie were already oozing out of its battered shell.

Our expectations had been that the dish would be too sickly sweet, but we were definitely proved wrong. For some magical reason, the batter and ice cream actually balanced out the sweetness of the egg itself, and was quite delicious.

However, we would recommend sharing one between two, as it does get a little rich if you try to demolish the entire thing yourself.

Priced at £4.50, you can pick up the eggs at McLarens on the Corner from Good Friday (April 2), until Easter Sunday (April 4).

Or if you can't make it down, you can find the recipe to try and recreate it at home here.
