Edinburgh duo the Proclaimers back Alex Salmond's Alba party in Scottish election

Voters should back Alex Salmond's new pro-independence Alba party in May, the Proclaimers have said.

The duo announced in a video on social media that they'd be backing the former First Minister's party, which says it hopes to create a "super majority" for independence in the next Scottish Parliament.

Voters will head to the polls on May 6 to decide who will represent them in Holyrood.

In a video, one half of chart topping duo, Charlie, said: “Hi we’re the Proclaimers and we’re backing Alba for the Scots Parliamentary elections in May.

“We want to build as big a majority as possible towards putting pressure on Westminster to grant Indyref two."

Craig added: “Vote Alba on your list vote.”

Both Craig and Charlie are long time supporters of the SNP and Scottish Independence, and backed a vote for independence in the 2014 referendum.

Kenny MacAskill, Alba’s top candidate on the Lothians regional list, said: “Charlie and Craig are lifelong independence supporters.

“This will be a tremendous boost to Alba’s campaign to persuade people to make both votes count for independence.”

But Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP have insisted the only way to guarantee a majority in the next parliament is by voters using both their votes for them.

And in recent comments, Sturgeon said Salmond's new party was a gamble.

She told the BBC: "I think he is seeking to ask people to gamble on the outcome of this election.

"I don't think that is the right thing to do.

"I think if you want an SNP government, you’ve got to vote for an SNP government and there are many positive reasons to do so.

"I don't think this is a friendly gesture on Mr Salmond's part towards the SNP."

Responding to the Proclaimers support for Alba, an SNP spokesperson told the Sunday Mail: “The only way to ensure Scotland’s future is in Scotland’s hands is by giving both votes to the SNP."
