Edinburgh drivers 'twice as safe' as Glasgow drivers in wintery conditions

Drivers in Edinburgh are involved in almost half as many poor weather road accidents as Glasgow drivers according to a new study.

Wintery conditions such as snow, ice, and wet weather make roads significantly more dangerous to travel on, leading to a higher number of accidents.

Research carried out by automotive experts Leasing Options found almost twice as many poor weather accidents reported last year in Glasgow compared with Edinburgh.

In the past year, 246 accidents as a result of bad weather conditions occurred in Glasgow, compared with just 132 in Edinburgh.

This marks an increase of 186%, or almost twice as many accidents.

Out of the 246 accidents reported in Glasgow, 236 were the result of wet weather or floods, while 10 happened due to snow or ice.

In Edinburgh, 130 out of the 132 poor weather accidents occurred due to wet or flooded roads, with the remaining two being due to snowy or icy conditions.

The only area of Scotland to top Glasgow when it came to ice and snow-related accidents was the Highland area of the country, with 16 reported accidents.

Leasing Options used data from the Department of Transport RRCGB reports to conduct the study.
