Edinburgh drivers 'targeted with fireworks' on busy road as police investigate

Residents of Edinburgh have warned others after spotting youths throwing fireworks at vehicles in the Broomhouse area of Edinburgh on Sunday night.

Police have confirmed that they received reports of a group of young people throwing fireworks at passing vehicles and people on Broomhouse Road at around 7:45pm.

Although there was no sign of those responsible when police arrived at the scene, senior officers today condemned the misuse of fireworks.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "“Officers were called to attend Broomhouse Road in Edinburgh following a report of youths throwing fireworks on Sunday, 24 October, 2021. No trace of anyone in the area was found.

“The vast majority of people purchase fireworks in order to enjoy Halloween and Bonfire Night responsibly, however we understand a minority use this period to get involved with disorder and the anti-social use of fireworks.

“Not only are they dangerous items when not handled correctly, but firework disorder is not acceptable and we will target those who commit these type of offences. Anyone with information about such criminality should report this to us via 101, or in an emergency dial 999.”

Earlier this month, we reported that West Lothian fire officers have been working with community police and council youth teams to reinforce safety messages in the run up to Bonfire Night.

The SFRS Community Action Team will also provide virtual support for schools appropriate to the risk.

All primary schools will be provided with interactive educational resources through GLOW- the education services platform.
