Edinburgh drinkers flood city's nightclubs to enjoy last night before Covid ban

Edinburgh revellers have been pictured maskless in the city's nightclubs on Boxing Day night enjoying one last night of fun before they close for at least three weeks.

Social media footage shows hundreds of clubbers gathered in crowded venues across the city centre on December 26.

Nicola Sturgeon announced the new restrictions earlier in the week, with bars allowed to stay open provided they offer table service only.

Nightclubs had the option to follow these temporary rules after Christmas but have now agreed to close and access business support cash instead. Venues were open on Boxing Day night but restrictions have been in force since 5am today.

The video footage shows dozens of party goers in clubs on Edinburgh's George Street dressed up for the occasion and splashing out on plush bottles of vodka brought to the table with large sparklers.

Hundreds of people can be seen on the crowded dance floor making the most of the last night at the party venues for a couple of weeks.

Another video shows the main room at Hive packed while waves of punters dance along to Hey Ya by Outkast while in a club nearby ravers danced to techno under the luminous green laser lights.

The establishments were open till 5am and played till the last minute they were forced to close the doors again.

These changes mean the country's night time economy faces another bleak New Year period with dancefloors lying empty on Hogmanay - traditionally one of the busiest nights of the year.

All of the Edinburgh Hogmanay events run by Underbelly have also been cancelled including the Torch Light Procession, Street Party and Fireworks Display.
