Edinburgh domestic abuse thug dropped by new club after signing backlash

A domestic abuse brute who assaulted his former Scotland International partner has been axed from the club he signed for just weeks ago.

37-year-old Paul Tansey left Whitehill Welfare FC, after joining them in July. Tansey, the brother of former Scotland star Leigh Griffiths, abused Celtic’s Lisa Robertson during a 10-month long tirade.

After his conviction in May, he was sacked from his then-club Penicuik Athletic. However, East of Scotland division one side quietly acquired the brute during the summer.

According to the Daily Record , the move has sparked backlash in the Midlothian community of Rosewell, where the club are based, and has led to a petition from locals to terminate Tansey’s contract.

Tansey started in all four of Whitehill’s games so far this season but last night, on the eve of their clash with Kennoway Star Hearts, the club revealed that they had dropped the midfielder.

Posting on Twitter, they said: "Whitehill Welfare FC can confirm that Paul Tansey has left the club. We will be making no further comment on this matter."

Tansey pled guilty to his abusive conduct of his partner between July 2020 and May 2021. One incident saw the Dalkeith footballer headbutt Lisa after he turned up in a fit of rage at her Edinburgh home.

The brute also regularly checked her phone use and accused her of cheating on him throughout their relationship. The midfielder also repeatedly contacted Lisa by phone and text and even came to her home uninvited, threatening to harm himself. Tansey was later given a five year non-harassment order and 80 hours unpaid work.

After being signed by Whitehill, fuming locals released a statement along with their petition to have Tansey removed from the club.

It read: "The people of Rosewell and the wider Midlothian area do not condone domestic abuse of any form and it is not welcome here amongst this family-oriented community. Local football is a wonderful tradition, but a team cannot possibly support a person who has very deliberately physically and emotionally harmed others with lasting consequences.

"This community certainly will not. Too often we hear about players convicted of domestic abuse within football, and we will take a stand against it."

Celtic FC midfielder star Lisa, 30, signed for the Glasgow club in 2020 and was on loan at Birmingham last season.

She has also played for Hibernian Women, Glasgow City and Durham Women FC and earned eight full international caps with the Scotland Women's national team.
