Edinburgh dog rescued after she was stuck in a sewage pipe for an entire day

Dog walkers in Edinburgh are being urged to look out for hidden sewage pipes after a local couple's dog was trapped for over a day.

Sarah Adams and partner Declan Kemp were left desperately searching for their pet dog Coco after she went missing on her evening walk on Thursday night.

Despite rallying 20 people to search the local area, Sarah was left fearing Coco had been snatched after they failed to find her following a full day searching.

Declan and Sarah headed out first thing Saturday morning and returned to the field where Coco was last seen, and heard Coco "yelping".

They managed to find her, and saw she had fallen down a hole which was partially covered in grass.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Sarah explained Coco knew the area well and would have been able to find her way home to where they live near the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

"It didn't make sense, I thought I would have heard her barking or something, but I heard nothing. Within about 10 minutes I knew something was very wrong because she usually comes back.

"Within the hour I had about 20 people helping me search every inch of the field but we couldn't find her. At this point I started to think she had been stolen because it was just so unusual for Coco," Sarah said.

Her partner woke her up on Friday morning to say he was heading back out to look again, and he and Sarah returned to where they had last seen Coco.

"I think we had just got lucky, if she hadn't yelped at the exact moment we probably would never had found her.

Coco had fallen down a hole partially covered by grass which could have been easily missed. Despiite walking there regularly, Sarah had never seen it before.

She immediately jumped in to rescue Coco, only then realising it was around five foot deep.

"There was no way Coco would have seen it, and because it was so deep there was no way she could have gotten out herself," she said.

Her partner Declan called the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, but Sarah managed to climb out with Coco just before they arrived. Sarah took Coco to the vet, but luckily she was completely unharmed apart from being shaken up.

And now, Sarah wants to warn other local dog walkers and children living in the area who she fears could end up stuck with no way of getting to safety.

"We found another three or four along that road which were poorly covered or not covered at all."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service told Edinburgh Live: "We responded at 9:34am on Saturday June 23 to reports of a dog trapped within a train.

"Operations control mobilised an appliance to the scene. However, the animal had been freed prior to the crews arrival.

"Firefighters secured the drain entrance with a metal grid and notified local authority partners before leaving the scene.
