Edinburgh dog-owners warned as giant stinging jellyfish appear on popular beach

Locals have been warned to take care on Cramond Beach this weekend after one Facebook user shared the news that Lion's mane jellyfish have turned up on the shore.

In a post on Facebook group 'Streets of Edinburgh' a post was shared showing a picture of the enormous jellyfish.

The Lion's Mane jellyfish is the largest known species of jellyfish with the ability to grow over 6ft 7in.

Although their stings are not known to be fatal, most encounters with a Lion's Mane result in temporary pain and localised redness.

Tentacles can still hurt humans and pets if they are wet - meaning that the creatures still pack a nasty sting even if they're dead.

Dog-walkers who frequent Cramond Beach were advised to keep an eye on their pooches - as it's not just humans who can get stung.

What should you do if you're stung by a jellyfish?

- Rinse the affected area with seawater (not fresh water)

- Remove any spines from the skin using tweezers or the edge of a bank card.

- Soak the area in very warm water for at least 30 minutes – use hot flannels or towels if you cannot soak it.

- Take painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen.

- You should not use vinegar, apply ice or a cold pack, cover the wound or touch any of the spines. And contrary to popular belief, do NOT urinate on the sting.
