Edinburgh dog owner says pet accidentally ate rat poison as she issues warning

An Edinburgh dog walker has warned others after her Golden Retreiver accidentally ate rat poison over the weekend.

Six-year-old Loki ate the poison at a family home on Sunday.

The adorable one-eyed pub lost his eye when he was just one to cancer and gave his owner a fright on Sunday when he dropped the rat poison sachet he had been munching.

His owner Mags acted fast and when she couldn’t get through to the emergency vets in time and phoned Animal Poison Control.

They were able to find out more details on the exact poison Loki had ingested and if it would be fatal.

The charity informed the panicked owner that if the dog had been another breed or had ingested the poison in powder form it could have been a very different story.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live Mags said:

“It happened in a family home, it was well hidden and forgot they had an ant problem in the summer.

“Even with a background and diploma in animal care I froze. I spent six months studying poisons, rat poison, de-icer and anti-freeze.

“Loki brought the packet of poison to show me and spat it out. He didn’t know and can be quite silly sometimes.

“So it was lucky he brought it to me otherwise I would not have known. You can study and study but in that situation you just freeze.

“The Animal Poison Control can give you all the details of the poison, luckily Loki ingested gel poison which is usually watered down.

“We were told to monitor him and finally got through to the emergency vets who told us to feed him every couple of hours for his stomach.

“He’s quite tired and irritable today but very happy to get the extra food yesterday.”

Mags took to Facebook to share the terrifying experience involving her pup:

“I had a horrible experience tonight, where my dog found and ate poison.

“Despite being veterinary trained- my heart sank and I panicked.

“I wasn’t aware, but this number can tell you immediately if an animal requires vet treatment from eating poison.

“They are reliant on call charges; so tonight being a Sunday cost me £45, but I couldn’t at the time get through to our emergency vets.

“It’s worth saving in your phone if you have dogs/cats. I am first trained, but because Loki ate something I wasn’t aware even existed, it sent me into a flap of panic.

“He’s fine- he’s on high watch for the evening, and feeding every two-three hours with water to help bind his tum.

“Thankfully is a 40kg retriever- but if it had been the gel form, and a powder instead, or if he had been a smaller breed, it would be a different scenario.

“Just hoping this helps someone else from going through the panic I did, despite my degree in animal care.”

“The emergency number is 01202509000.”
