Edinburgh dog owner's quick thinking saves pet after drama at beauty spot

A concerned Edinburgh dog owner has shared her relief at being able to react quickly as her beloved pet became entangled in a discarded fishing line.

Amanda King was on a walk along Wardie Bay in Granton with her 11-year-old daughter Millie and their “fur baby” Teddy on the evening of Saturday July 23.

But during their stroll, Millie noticed that their cute Schison had a fishing line wrapped around his paws, and more worryingly, his neck.

The quick thinking mum used her keys to slice through the line to ensure that it did not harm the family’s well loved dog.

Amanda says that it could have become a serious issue if they had not noticed as quickly as they did and that the line could have also hurt a child.

She shared her story with Edinburgh Live in the hope of raising awareness of the damage that littered fishing lines can cause to small animals.

She said: “We were on an evening stroll down the Bay with our dog and he got tangled up on a fishing line at the sand area leading up to the pier walkway.

“My daughter Millie noticed it around his paws and on closer inspection it was also wrapped around his neck and back paws.

“As I walked over to free him, I too became tangled as it was extremely long and invisible as you can imagine.

“I never had anything to cut the line but used my keys to slice it away from my boy before it did any damage.

“I am so glad we noticed it quickly, as god knows what damage it could have caused to my boy.

“I collected the line I could see and put it in the bucket on the main road so that no other poor dogs, people or children get wrapped in it.”

It is understood that little Teddy made it home safely after Amanda and Millie’s fast reactions.
