Edinburgh dad on hunt for rare 50p coins in unique fundraiser in memory of tragic daughter

An Edinburgh man is on the hunt for some rare 50p coins as part of a unique fundraiser in memory of his daughter.

Dave Cullen tragically lost his 13-year-old daughter Charlotte in July this year after a lengthy battle with a rare genetic condition known as microcephaly.

The condition is where a baby is born with a small head or the head stops growing after birth.

Health experts say just one baby in several thousand is born with microcephaly.

The life expectancy of those suffering from the condition is reduced with no specific treatment available.

Babies with the condition are known to suffer from a range of problems such as seizures, hearing loss and vision impairment.

Dave told the Daily Record that Charlotte would be in and out of hospital at least once a month due to illness.

The freelance photographer is still “coming to terms” with the news almost four months on from her passing.

One of coins Dave is seeking is the Kew Gardens 50p of 2009 - one of the rarest in circulation (Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Now, he is looking to use his hobby for collecting coins to raise some money for Children’s Hospice’s Across Scotland ( CHAS ) and The Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

“Both organisations helped a great deal when we were in need of support”, he said.

Dave has been collecting coins throughout the year to a fill book full of all 50ps produced since 1997.

He is hoping the book will become a collectors item which will then be auctioned off - with the proceedings going to charity.

But there are just four empty slots that Dave is trying painstakingly hard to find - so he is looking for a bit of help to get them.

The coins include the 2009 Kew Gardens, 2018 and 2020 shields, in addition to the 2020 Team GB Olympic.

Writing on Facebook, he said: “These four coins I know no one will donate to the books, however I am looking and asking to you all if anyone knows anyone, links etc, that will do me a deal so that once I complete the book I can auction it off and raise money for the children’s hospital.”

Dave will then create another book of the rare coins which he will also donate in memory of his daughter.

Those looking to donate a coin or provide Dave any information on the coins should email here.
