Edinburgh dad fumes after 'handful of sweets' costs £10 at the Christmas Market

An Edinburgh dad has been left fuming after paying a tenner for a handful of sweets at the Christmas Market.

Douglas Duffy and his partner took their two children to the Christmas market for a festive day out and the excited wee ones couldn’t wait to spend their £10 specially from their Nana and Papa for the special day out.

But the dad-of-two was left shocked when his daughter’s tiny bag of pick a mix came to £10.05 for a measly amount of sweets.

Douglas didn’t want his kids to waste all their money on the overpriced confectionery so paid for the sweets but was left in dismay at the steep prices.

The disappointed dad shared the shocking picture with Edinburgh Live, saying: “£10.05 at winter wonderland. Frightening prices.”

The images show the colourful mix of sweets laid out on a paper bag, for £10 you get one large red cable and about a dozen little fizzy sweets and a gummy dolphin.

He said: “As an Edinburgh resident all my life I take great pride in the fact we have such things like the Christmas market. But these prices are inexcusable.

“Me, my partner and our two children attended the market on Saturday December 5. Their nana and papa gave them £10 to spend.

“Our girl wanted a pick n mix. So my partner took her over to get some and well when they returned my partner was shocked.

“We looked inside the bag. As you can see from the contents it's less than a £1 bag of haribo. I will admit there was also a blue dolphin which she ate as we walked around.

“I don't think it would stop me going again but I would advise getting a £3 meal prior, I have the proof as we had to pay by card as I didn't want the kids spending all their money on a small bag of pick n mix.”

Kingdom of Sweets who run the stall have previously been criticised for the steep prices but insist that a lot of their confectionery stock is imported from overseas, which means it incurs an added cost - and this may well be heightened with Brexit and the shortage of HGV drivers.

Kingdom of Sweets have been contacted for comment.
