Edinburgh cyclist holds up Princes Street tram after altercation at red light

An Edinburgh cyclist and tram driver were seen at loggerheads on Thursday after an altercation at a red light.

Taken aback onlookers on Princes Street had watched on during rush hour as the two road users appeared agitated as they moved onto Princes Street.

Both allowed onto the stretch of road, the cyclist and the city tram had been waiting at the West End junction for the green traffic light.

However, passers-by told Edinburgh Live that when the lights had turned, the tram had used their horn towards the cyclist, which had sparked off the confrontation.

A clip filmed just a few moments louder showed the cyclist deliberately pedalling directly in front of the tram to block it from moving past. The cyclist was also caught on camera gesturing at the driver as the tram trailed behind them.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, one passerby, 46, said: "You could see them waiting at a red light on Princes Street at the bottom of Lothian Road. The cyclist was just in front of the tram and all of a sudden the tram driver tooted his horn as the lights changed to green.

"You could see the cyclist was agitated because she turned around and gestured to the driver before pulling off. She then just rode along Princes Street in the middle of the tram tracks continuing to remonstrate with the tram following behind slowly. At one point she turned around and gave the driver the finger.

"Princes Street was pretty busy at that time of the morning with commuters - you could hear one bloke say 'what is that cyclist doing?' before bursting into laughter.

"It was all pretty weird. I mean, I've seen plenty of cyclist and driver rammies around Edinburgh but never one with a tram before."
