Edinburgh Covid tier review: Nicola Sturgeon confirms that city will remain in level three

Edinburgh will remain in level three for at least another week, although a further review will take place next week ahead of Christmas.

Nicola Sturgeon told the Scottish Parliament this afternoon that no areas will move down a tier this week.

She said that last week's decision, to keep the City of Edinburgh in level three, was proven to be the correct call given the recent case levels, and relaxing restrictions would be "deeply irresponsible".

The First Minister did add that another review would take place next week ahead of the Christmas and New Year period.

She said: "In the past week case numbers in the city of Edinburgh have increased by more than 40 per cent. From 70 to 100 per 100,000 of the population.

"Numbers in Midlothian have risen even more sharply from 88 to 147 per 100,000 population. Test positivity has also increased in both areas.

"Our judgement remains therefore that it would be deeply irresponsible to ease restrictions in either the City of Edinburgh or Midlothian at a time when cases are rising sharply."

There had been frustration last week that the city hadn't moved down to level two, with a legal challenge even being launched.
