Edinburgh Covid lockdown breakers left angry note after late-night parties in plush park

A strongly worded note has been left for lockdown rule breakers responsible for holding late-night parties in Edinburgh's plush Queen Street Gardens.

Police are said to be aware of gatherings of more than six people taking place in the park with patrols being stepped up in and around the gardens as a result.

Notices have also been put up on the gates of the private garden in the New Town area warning those responsible for arranging these events that their key will be confiscated if they are caught.

The notice reads: "Garden users are reminded that outdoor gatherings of over six people are illegal under current Scottish Government legislation.

"The police are now aware of the late night parties which are regularly taking place, and will be patrolling the area . If the key holder who is organising these gatherings is identified the key will be confiscated and if they are a tenant their landlord will be informed.

"Students in further education will be reported to their institutions who may take further action.

"This anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated by the users and Commissioners of the Gardens."

In recent months police have identified Portobello Beach and The Meadows as two areas lockdown rule breakers had been gathering. Additional patrols were carried out as a result and action was taken against those blatantly breaching the restrictions.

Police Scotland have been contacted for more information on Queen Street Gardens.

It emerged last week that police had dealt with 22,000 complaints about illegal lockdown gatherings across Scotland between November and early January.

We revealed that officers in Edinburgh were called to break up a massive rave with strobe lights in the city, at which more than 100 people were present, earlier this year.
