Edinburgh Covid latest: Pollock Halls identified as major virus hotspot in new report

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that a significant proportion of Covid cases recorded among Scotland's students were at Edinburgh’s Pollock Halls.

Speaking at today's daily coronavirus briefing the FM said : "Between the first of August and the end of November, there were almost 3000 Covid cases associated with what are called student postcodes. In other words postcodes for halls of residence and other accommodation intended specifically for students.

"Almost two thirds occurred in a three week period in late September and early October, and overall more than three quarters were in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

"In fact, a high proportion, around a quarter, were specifically in Pollock Halls in Edinburgh and the Murano Halls in Glasgow".

Pollock Halls was put into lockdown in early October this year due a mass outbreak of the virus in the accommodation. The student halls lockdown across Scotland was followed with reports that police officers broke up a number of parties at Pollock Halls.

The crackdown saw officers break up "numerous" groups of students, after Nicola Sturgeon told students in Scotland they were not allowed to go to parties, pubs or restaurants following a wave of virus outbreaks.

The FM said that the numbers of Covid cases show in the new report: "sets out lessons for the next semester and many of these were set out to parliament yesterday by the deputy first minister, such as increased testing, staggered arrival times for students, and students reducing social contact both before and after traveling".
