Edinburgh Councillor fuming over persistent pavement parking in city

An Edinburgh councillor is fuming over the persistent issue with parking on pavements across the city and the danger faced by those with buggies having to dodge traffic.

Councillor Sue Webber has hit out at the number of parked cars on Lanark Road which she describes as an ongoing issue and poses danger to those with buggies trying to dodge traffic.

Residents can report illegally parked vehicles via the Edinburgh Council website but that doesn't stop motorists from parking and as vehicles are usually only parked for a short time it's hard to control.

Parking restrictions are in place Monday to Friday but again this doesn't stop cars parking on pavements judging from the number of reports on this issue.

Many locals have reported cars parking on pavements across the city and aired concerns over accessibility when the pavement is blocked with vehicles.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live Councillor Sue Webber said: "This is not a new issue. For years now we have had to witness pedestrians being forced onto the busy Lanark Road West as vehicle owners persistently chose to park on the pavements blocking them completely.

"When I see mums with buggies dodging traffic I get very upset. There is not a time that you pass this stretch of road and do not see vehicles parked on the pavement.

"Even parking for a wee while increases danger for pedestrians. Courier vans, residents of the flats, everyone seems to think that this is ok!

"In the past I have approached the Housing Association for assistance. I have been discussing options with the Council officers that could increase the enforcement visits.

"I am at my wits end. And I am now in regular correspondence with two separate constituents that live in the flats, who like me want something done here.

"There is nothing to stop the vehicles parking on the road, although I do recognise that there are limited restrictions at peak times Monday to Friday. Pavements are for pedestrians, not for parking your car or van, with either two wheels or four. Enough is enough"
