Edinburgh councillor branded a 'Karen' and 'concerned for her safety' on Lothian Bus

An Edinburgh councillor was “concerned for her safety” and branded a “Karen” by a group of yobs on a Lothian bus.

Councillor Sue Webber was travelling on the number 30 along Princes Street on Saturday evening when two individuals with their faces partially hidden were smoking a vape device which is prohibited on the bus.

The youngsters began to harass the councillor when she asked them not to vape on the bus.

One then began to vape in protest before saying to Sue she is “exactly the type of person who is a Karen.”

The councillor shared how at points she was “afraid for her safety” and could see the situation escalating before the group of youths got off the bus.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live Councillor Sue Webber said:

“It was kids getting boisterous and being aggressive towards me on the Service 30.

“I said to them they shouldn’t use their vapour device on the bus. The other lad then took great pleasure in asking for it and made a show of inhaling, before saying I was ‘exactly the sort of person who is a “Karen”’.

“You can easily see how it can escalate into something more serious.

“One of their “friends” then thumped on the window from outside the bus, at the point where I was sitting. I got some fright.

“This was when we went past the Scott Monument. That seemed to be what ignited their bravado further.

“There were three young lads, only two involved.

“The third stayed well back and out of it.

“They got off at that Scott monument stop, as did I. So until they ran off, I was a wee bit concerned for my safety.”

Lothian Buses have been contacted for comment.
