Edinburgh Council to deliver 2000 food packages to vulnerable families tomorrow

The City of Edinburgh Council have announced that they are going to deliver 2,000 emergency food parcels on Friday, to vulnerable families across the city.

The parcels themselves will include recipes and advice on safe food storage, as well as essential items such as milk, bread, pasta and fruit. The city has seen a low stock of essential items in recent weeks, as stockpiling and panic buying due to COVID-19 caused a dip in supply.

A team of drivers will be delivering the parcels to families who have been identified as being most in need during this unprecedented time.

The parcels have been created in the wake of the council's catering service, which donated left-over food from school kitchens, which have now closed, to local food banks and care homes.

Council Leader Adam McVey said:

“These food parcels are going to be critical in helping our most vulnerable families at this unprecedented time. Many of them are under huge pressures, struggling with living at home and burdened with financial worries so it’s vital we do everything we can to support them.

“This is in addition to the thousands of meals being distributed around the city by voluntary organisations right now and we’ll continue working with EVOC and Volunteer Edinburgh to coordinate this effort as it grows to support people in our communities in the coming weeks.”

Depute Leader Cammy Day said:

“Getting regular, good nutritious food will make a big difference to their daily lives as many will be finding it difficult to buy basic items they need to feed their families. Thanks must go the different Council teams who have all pulled together to help our families most in need.”

The parcels will be delivered tomorrow, Friday 27th March.
