Edinburgh council's cleansing depot to be transformed into new housing

Edinburgh Council has submitted plans to deliver more affordable housing in the city.

The new project will see an apartment block built at Cowan's Close and is part of the council's drive to deliver 20,000 new homes.

The council say that the housing crisis is so severe that for every council house that becomes available there are an average of 192 households ‘bidding’ to get it, and for people with additional support needs there is an even greater shortage of suitable housing.

The Cowan Close site is currently used by the Cleansing department at the council but they are due to move to the Seafield depot in the near future.

In total at the site there will be 19 new council homes built, but all will be designed for wheelchair users only.

A council spokesperson said: “As well as the shortage of affordable housing there is an even greater shortage of adapted homes suitable for people with a disability or who need to use a wheelchair.

“The proposal to build new wheelchair-adapted council homes at Cowan’s Close is being done as part of a council target to build 20,000 new affordable homes in the city aimed at addressing some of that need.”
