Edinburgh Council opts out of providing pupils and staff with 50% off school meals

The City of Edinburgh Council has chosen not to provide parents of school pupils with the benefit of the 'Eat Out to Help Out' Treasury scheme.

The Eat Out to Help Out scheme in Scotland extends beyond restaurants, bars and pubs to school dining rooms as well.

According to the BBC, 15 out of Scotland's 32 local councils have signed up, enabling parents to pay 50 per cent less on their children's meals Monday - Wednesday every week.

The discount benefits staff and parents who normally pay for their children's canteen food - allowing them to get 50 per cent off three days a week.

It operates in schools, as it does in other restaurants and bars, by offering a half price discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks, up to a maximum of £10 discount per diner.

West Lothian Council signed up to the scheme, but The City of Edinburgh Council and East Lothian Council have chosen not to.

The City of Edinburgh Council refused to provide official comment, but said it had not been an immediate priority of the council.

West Lothian Council did opt in to provide staff and pupils with the discount.

Executive councillor for the environment, Tom Conn, said: "I'm delighted that pupils will be able to enjoy a tasty and nutritious school meal for half price, thanks to the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

"I know this will be appreciated by many parents and carers, and help encourage pupils to try school meals again following the extended break."
