Edinburgh Council leader plans to lobby Scottish Government to move city into level two

Edinburgh Council's leader is planning to lobby the Scottish Government to move the capital into level two.

There has been an outpouring of fury from local residents, businesses and councillors after Nicola Sturgeon announced that Edinburgh was to remain in level three lockdown on Tuesday.

Labour MSP Richard Leonard demanded "evidence" for the people of Edinburgh, where, he pointed out, the virus is "under greater control" than other parts of the country.

Much of the frustration centres around the capital going into the same lockdown level as the likes of Glasgow, which was previously in level four, despite meeting the criteria for level two.

It has also been noted that the city is scoring better than three of the local authorities which have been allowed to move down to level two from Friday.

Edinburgh Council Leader Adam McVey and Deputy Leader Cammy Day are tabling an emergency motion, urging councillors to speak with "one voice as a city".

In the motion, the councillors write that they have "consistently made Edinburgh's case for the least restrictive level" and the case numbers in Edinburgh "are within level two rates", adding that the council "seriously regrets" the government's decision to keep the city in level three.

The motion moves to pledge that the council will "lobby the Scottish Government" and "insist the government follow scientific evidence and advice" that indicates Edinburgh has consistently been in level two.

If the council agrees, they will also calling for the Scottish Government to "allocate an appropriate level of funding to help deal with the unique circumstances facing the Edinburgh economy" to help protect jobs.
