Edinburgh Council launch virtual bear hunt to help kids cope with transition from nursery to school

Edinburgh Council has launched an online 'bear hunt' project which aims to help children making the transition between nursery and primary school while in lockdown.

The project will include six weeks of bear hunt themed tasks that parents and guardians can do with little ones at home.

The idea is that children across the capital will become familiar with the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, and this will give them something in common with other children when normality resumes.

Edinburgh City Council also plans to continue activities themed around the book when children make the move to a primary school setting.

Council Leader Adam McVey said “Our very youngest children would usually be preparing to start their primary school journey but we’ve had to adapt our plans to help children make the transition into schools due to Covid-19.

"Despite the challenges, our early years teams and primary schools are working together remotely on a project to give children a shared experience for when they start school and return to nursery."

He added: “We’re asking families to get involved in our six weeks of fun activities based on the popular children’s book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ as part of our support for Edinburgh’s under 5s. Research shows that shared experiences are one of the ways that we can support children during times of change and this project is a great way of achieving this.”
