Edinburgh council approve plush new four-storey apartment block on site of old brass works

Edinburgh council has approved a new four-story apartment block on the site of an old brass works.

The City of Edinburgh Council approved the application on Thursday November 4 to create the apartment block at 20 Meadow Place Road.

The site lies within the Corstorphine Town Centre and the proposal is to create 20 two bedroom units, with an additional four three bedroom dwellings.

In 1936 James H. Lamont and Co Ltd registered the premises and began work as engineers, founders and finishers but closed sometime after 1961. The site has been used for various commercial operations since then.

The east of Meadow Place Road is primarily residential in character with detached and semi-detached bungalows evident. In the wider area lies Ladywell Medical Centre and Corstorphine Primary School to the south-east.

However, some locals objected to the planning application on the grounds of increased traffic and loss of privacy, among the issues.

The site is located on Meadow Place Road, which is a secondary Road that links to Glasgow Road to the north of the site.

Glasgow Road (Corstorphine Road) is an established busy arterial route to Edinburgh city centre and connects east to Edinburgh city centre and west to the Gyle, Edinburgh Airport and beyond to Glasgow via the M8 motorway.

The City of Edinburgh Council’s development committee met and decided to recommend that the plan is approved.

They said: “The proposal complies with the Edinburgh Local Development Plan. The proposal is acceptable in principle and will not have a detrimental impact on the quality and character of the local environment or the spatial pattern of the surrounding area.

“The proposal will result in the creation of a satisfactory residential environment and will not have an unreasonable impact on the amenity of neighbouring residents.”
