Edinburgh cops patrol Portobello after locals complain about badly behaved youths

Police are stepping up their patrols in Portobello after complaints about badly behaved youths in the area.

Officers from Craigmillar Police Station have been carrying out extra checks near Portobello beach in a bid to deter "youth disorder". This comes after local people spoke out against anti-social behaviour in the neighbourhood.

Community officers shared an image their high-visibility patrols on social media on Monday.

When asked by Edinburgh Live about the nature of this activity, officers were keen to stress that they'll act on any information they receive from the local community.

They say the patrols are not being carried out in response to one specific incident, but rather complaints about existing problems in "highlighted areas"

Sergeant Suzie Sandbach of the Community Policing Team at Craigmillar Police Station said "We know that anti-social behaviour has a disruptive effect on local communities and will act on any information we receive.

"We are aware of concerns raised by the community in the Portobello area and officers carry out regular highly visible patrols of highlighted areas.

"We also in regular contact with a number of partners and community groups in the area in an effort to provide education and deter people from becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.

"It is worth stressing that the vast majority of young people do not come to the attention of police.

"A small minority do sometimes become involved in anti-social behaviour and police will take appropriate action where incidents are reported and offenders identified.

"I would also urge parents and guardians to make sure that they know where their children are, who they are associating with and what they are doing.

"Anyone who has concerns about anti-social behaviour in their area is encouraged to contact police by calling 101 as promptly as possible."
