Edinburgh continues to be worst performing area for vaccinations in Scotland

Edinburgh continues to be the worse performing region in Scotland for Covid-19 vaccinations.

The latest Public Health Scotland data reveals that just 50.7 per cent of residents have had their second vaccination.

This is the lowest in Scotland, with Glasgow next at 53 per cent and Aberdeen third with 56.2.

Edinburgh’s bad performance for second vaccinations can perhaps be explained on the poor uptake of first doses by 18-29 year group.

In the capital just 55.8 per cent of people in the 18-29 year old age group have had the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, despite NHS Lothian drop-in services having been available for the past two weeks.

People aged 30-39 years old have also been slow to take up the opportunity to be vaccinated in Edinburgh, with 73.2 per cent having received their first jag to date.

Patients have to wait for up to eight weeks to receive the second dose of the jag after their first dose so it could be sometime yet before Edinburgh catches up with the rest of Scotland.

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon said this week that people who have had both doses of the vaccine could stand a much better chance of holidaying abroad.

UK transport secretary Grant Shapps said that, from July 19, UK residents who are fully vaccinated will not have to self-isolate when they return to England from countries on the ‘amber’ list.

Ms Sturgeon says that the Scottish Government are considering a similar move.

She said: “We are considering that carefully. We will look carefully at the statement that’s been made in the UK, and we’ll come to a decision on that fairly soon in terms whether or not that will apply to people returning to Scotland.”
