Edinburgh College coronavirus fears as students 'told to self isolate' as classmate shows possible symptoms

Around 15 learners at Edinburgh College were advised to self-isolate themselves yesterday after a student began showing signs of coronavirus.

As reported by the Daily Record, one student told the paper that approximately 15 students had been given the warning after coming into contact with a classmate showing similar symptoms to that of the virus.

They said that the students were in a business class at the Sighthill campus of the college on the afternoon of Tuesday 4 March.

In video footage shared on social media, a male college worker can be seen quizzing students on how they travelled to the campus that day.

He asks: "How many have come by public transport? Hands up."

He can then be heard saying: "There's five."

One student, who did not wish to be named, said that a female learner appeared "very distressed" and "severely ill", prompting fears she may have the virus.

According to the source, several students in the class had recently returned from Northern Italy.

Edinburgh College told Edinburgh Live: “In line with guidance provided by Public Health, Edinburgh College took precautionary measures yesterday, when a student presented with symptoms similar to those associated with COVID-19.

"To protect the health and wellbeing of students and staff, a member of staff acted on the Public Health guidance and those who had been in contact with the student were sent home as a precaution and advised to call NHS 111 if they began to develop symptoms.

"Public Health confirmed late evening that the student was not at risk of having COVID-19. As a result, the College was advised that all those involved could return to college as normal the following day (today).”

The total number of diagnosed coronavirus cases in Scotland rose to three overnight.
