Edinburgh Cocktail Week cancelled over physical distancing fears

Edinburgh Cocktail Week has become the latest event to fall victim to coronavirus.

The organisers of the event - which involves more than 70 bars and restaurants in the capital - admitted they were not confident that physical distancing could be ensured.

It had been scheduled for 12-18 October but has now been pencilled in for 11-17 October next year.

The event, which is partnered by dozens of brands including Edinburgh Gin, Edin Mill, Darnley's Gin, Highland Park and Lindores Abbey Distillery, offers customers cocktails for £4 at participating venues if they buy daily, weekend or week-long wristbands.

It also involves a tented cocktail village outside the Sheraton hotel, distillery tours and 'cocktail domes' in the rooftop garden of the Glasshouse hotel.

Wristbands already bought for this year will be rolled over to next year or refunded.

Edinburgh Cocktail Week managing director Gary Anderson said: " At this time, we are not confident physical distancing will have been lifted by October. Physical distancing drastically reduces the capacity of the participating bars, event venues and the Cocktail Village, which makes even a scaled-back festival impossible for us to deliver.

"Therefore, despite our very best efforts and unbreakable optimism, we sadly announce the cancellation of Edinburgh Cocktail Week 2020."
