Edinburgh City Council to resume brown bin and garden waste collections amid coronavirus shutdown

Edinburgh City Council has announced plans to reinstate the collection of brown bins and garden waste in the capital.

The news comes after the council made the decision to suspend all brown bin collections amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Edinburgh Live previously on how an Edinburgh landscaper received thousands of calls to collect garden waste after locals were left wondering what to do.

Edinburgh City Council said the decision was made to ensure that they could divert their resources to other essential waste collection while respecting social distancing.

Now due to the return of absent members of staff and "new collection arrangements " the service will be reinstated.

From May 11 onwards Edinburgh City Council will be resuming collections as well as issuing a refund to those who continued to pay for the service.

Council Leader Adam McVey said: "We’ve made every effort to continue to run core services, including waste collections, and I’m grateful to residents for their understanding of why we’ve had to make some temporary changes under these extraordinary circumstances.

"It's thanks to the enormous hard work of the Council’s waste team that we’re beginning to see those services returning to normal.

"I know many residents will be keen to get out and tend to their gardens and I’d like to thank them for their patience while brown bin collections were temporarily suspended to help us respond to the coronavirus outbreak.

"We will be extending the time period that the current payments cover to make sure residents get the number of collections they paid for and we’ll be writing to households with further details later in the year."
