Edinburgh city centre diner closes due to positive Covid case - and urges visitors to get tested

Canadian restaurant that locals love for its mouthwatering dishes and huge portions will be closed for two days following a positive Covid case report.

Down the Hatch diner at 13 Antigua Street broke the news via its Instagram page - and also urged anyone who visited to do a lateral flow test.

The post reads: "While we don't have to close, we have taken the decision to close for a couple of days to ensure all of our team members are tested and deep clean, so we can safely operate for the rest of the week.

"Sadly, if you have a booking, this will be cancelled. If you have been with us, please do a lateral flow."

Down the Hatch will be closed for sit-in today and tomorrow, December 20 and 21, respectively, opening for delivery and click and collect tomorrow at 5pm.

The "all things Canadian" diner started in 2015 with its first venue at Port Edgar Marina, Queensferry, which remains open.

The news comes amid a surge in Omicron coronavirus cases, the new variant that caused significant concerns and led to new restrictions. On Friday, December 17, Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that the Omicron variant is now the dominant variant in Scotland. The First Minister also urged Scots to "minimise their contact with other households before and after Christmas ".

Due to the new restrictions, the capital's hospitality sector is now overwhelmed with cancellations and closures as people drop their Christmas plans.
