Edinburgh city centre bus stop completely flattened by reversing lorry

Dramatic images show the aftermath of a bus stop in the heart of Edinburgh's West End being destroyed by a reversing lorry.

Witnesses said the structure on Magdala Crescent next to a Tesco was damaged on Friday morning by the truck attempting a three-point turn in the middle of the road.

The busy stop is close to Haymarket railway station and is used frequently by people travelling to and from the city.

An Edinburgh resident who was walking past at the time of the incident said: “I heard a loud smash of glass. I saw a lorry doing a three-point manoeuvre here at the bus stop.

“There was a forklift at the back and he didn’t realise that he hit the bus stop and he just drove off.”

Images from the scene show shards of glass scattered across the road and pavement. The metal frame is bent out of shape while advertising boards and timetables lie on the ground. The roof of the stop has been completely removed by the driver reversing.

Services such as the 12, 18, 26, 31 and X18 along with some other routes use the site. It is not thought anyone was injured in the incident.

Edinburgh City Council and Lothian Buses have been contacted for a comment on the incident and are currently investigating.
