New road closures will be in place on the Edinburgh City Bypass from this weekend as a five-week programme of overnight maintenance works gets underway.
The project, which starts on Sunday, July 11, will be carried out in 16 different phases with different sections of the A720 closing at different times.
The works will see BEAR Scotland carry out various routine maintenance tasks, tidy up carriageways and roadsides and reducing the longer term need for traffic management on the bypass.
Other tasks set to be carried out include litter picking, gully emptying, catchpit cleaning, weed spraying, road sweeping, pothole patching and repairs to signs and fences.
Road closures will be in place from 9pm to 6.30am each night, with diversions signposted in the area. On the first night (July 11) the Gogar to Hermiston on-slip eastbound will be totally shut, and this will be followed by the stretch between Calder and the Gogar Link Road overnight on July 12 into July 13.
Overall more than a dozen different stretches will close over the five-week period, with further details of which sections will be off-limits, and where diversions will go, available on the BEAR Scotland website.
Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “It’s essential for safety that we close the carriageway while these works are carried out, however we’ll be taking advantage of the closures to carry out as many routine maintenance tasks as possible at once.
“We’ve also split the works into phases so that only the minimum length of carriageway has to be closed on any given night.
“If you are planning to use the bypass at night over the next few weeks, our advice is to check what restrictions will be in place and allow extra time for your journey if necessary.
“We thank road users and the local community for their patience and understanding.”
BEAR Scotland say consultation has been carried out with emergency services and other relevant stakeholders regarding the road closures.
