Edinburgh City Bypass grinds to a halt as lorry breakdown leads to huge tailback

Edinburgh's City Bypass has ground to a halt after a lorry broke down near Gilmerton.

Drivers were stuck queuing in the heat – with additional delays of 30 minutes reported on the route.

The breakdown happened on the westbound carriageway of the A720 after Gilmerton with one lane closed off as of 2pm. Traffic was said to be queued back to Millerhill.

Traffic Scotland first reported news of the breakdown around 1.20pm, with trunk road support teams and police called in to assist.

In an update shortly before 2pm they added: "Lane one of two remains closed westbound after Gilmerton due to a broken down HGV. Traffic queuing back to Millerhill.

"Delays approx 30 minutes."

The incident was cleared shortly after 3pm.
