Edinburgh City Bypass closure: Another section of A720 to shut this weekend

Another section of the Edinburgh City Bypass will close to traffic this weekend.

The westbound carriageway will be shut between Baberton and Calder from 8.30pm on Saturday to 6am the following morning. This is so resurfacing works can be carried out by BEAR Scotland.

Diversions will be signposted from Baberton via the B701 and A71 before rejoining the City Bypass at Calder. This will add around three miles on to journeys. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained, and consultation has already been carried out with "relevant stakeholders".

The road has been closed westbound between Calder and Dreghorn junctions each night since Sunday, March 21. The project is expected to run until Wednesday, May 12. A single lane closure has also been in place eastbound.

BEAR Scotland say physical distancing protocols, in line with government guidance, will be in place for workers.

Tommy Deans, South East Network Manager, said: “A carriageway closure is essential to ensure the safety of workers and road users, however we’ve planned these works to take place overnight to minimise disruption.

“We thank motorists for their patience and encourage them to plan ahead by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”

The works will see three kilometres of steel barrier in the central reservation replaced. Improvements are also being carried out on the four bridges which span this section of the A720.
