Edinburgh Christmas Market: A price guide of what to expect this winter

The Edinburgh Christmas market is a well loved part of the capital’s Christmas tradition and its return this weekend after a two year hiatus saw it welcome large crowds from across the UK.

There is plenty to see and do from fair rides to fortune tellers but it is widely accepted that the visitors to the market are here for the traditional yummy festive treats like mulled wine, yule log and Bratwurst amongst many others.

So we headed down to get a feel for what damage will be inflicted on the purse or wallet strings of those attending this Christmas.

And there was a palpable excitement in the air with hundreds if not thousands of market goers in attendance for the first time in two years.

To kick things off we had a little peruse at the traditional beverages and their cost; with mulled wine and cider coming in at an eye watering £6 a cup with an additional £2 if you would like any add ons such as Rum Cherries added to the mix.

At the same stall, festive revellers are able to enjoy a half pint of German beer for £4, which to be fair will make any London tourist feel right at home.

Hot chocolates for the young whippersnappers are going for around £4 with 50p add ons for things like Marshmallows.

Staying with the beverage theme, we move onto the Highland Park Wild Harmony menu, which is very much in partnership with Rekorderlig cider.

There is a wide variety of fancy mulled plum ciders ranging from £5-6.50 with the pick of the bunch being a boozy Punsch Spiced Plum Cider which includes some Brugal Anejo Rum.

Hot chocolates are available for the small sprogs at a cost of £6 and wines, beers and ciders are also available and range anywhere between £4.50-6.00.

Now that we have wet the whistle, we will move onto the scran element of the market and what to expect price wise as you line your stomach on a cold winter's night.

The Mac Shack (The Mac Shack)

The Original German Sausage stand is selling their usual selection of giant sausages coupled with onions, pickles or curry sauce.

The Bratwurst, Krakauer and footlong are all going for around £7 a pop with a cheaper hot dog version at around £5 - although you tell me the difference between the Bratwurst and footlong?

Unfortunately the marinated steak appears to be out of stock and we are unsure if this is in fact due to Brexit or HGV driver shortages.

Moving onto a less traditional Christmas food - pizza and fries - we found that the pricing was pretty consistent with a humble margherita fetching £8, a pepperoni passion at £9 and a Highland as well as Braveheart pizza going for £10 a pop.

The dirty fries start from £6 with a variety of options.

And for all the hipsters out there, there is even the Mac Shack serving classic mac’n’cheese with crispy onions for £6 and more artisan options like the “Spicy Wan” going for £8.

Last but not least we have some dessert news to ensure you are getting those three courses in before a big Christmas night out.

The Belgian waffle stand is offering a sweet treat from £5 with additional toppings ranging from 50p-£2.

Several premises were accepting cash only, so make sure to withdraw some paper before venturing in.

The Edinburgh Christmas market is situated in Princess Street Gardens East and will run from November 20 until January 4 2022.
