Edinburgh Christmas lights to be switched on in neighbourhoods across city without usual ceremonies

It might not feel like we've got a normal Christmas on the way. This year is going be different in so many ways with talk of bubbles, outdoor meet-ups and virtual gatherings all on the agenda.

Covid-19 means Edinburgh's traditional festive celebrations are off the menu for 2020. There will be no Christmas Market, no big light-switch on in the city centre, and no packed bars filled with festive work nights out.

However residents will be pleased to know the city will still have a festive feel to it. Christmas trees, lights and decorations will be put up in communities throughout the capital in the coming weeks.

While traditional light switch-on ceremonies have had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, neighbourhoods will be able to enjoy the bright lights and festive decorations in their area.

Full details of switch-on dates and locations are yet to be confirmed, however the City of Edinburgh Council are hoping to have Christmas trees up early December – so we might only be a week or so away.

Last year Edinburgh Live told how Leith's Kirkgate, St Patrick Square, Corstorphine Parish Church, Morningside, Tollcross, Ratho Village and Gorgie White Park were among the areas to have their own Christmas decorations. Stick with us here and we'll bring you all the latest switch-on locations, dates and times as soon as we get them.

We reported earlier this month how the iconic Christmas tree on the Mound had gone up in the city. The tree was gifted by Hordaland County Council as a gesture of thanks to Scotland for helping Norway during World War Two and dates back to 1949.
