Edinburgh Christmas light switch on 2021 event confirmed but will be scaled back

Edinburgh will be dazzling as the lights will soon be switched on in the city, marking the start of the festive season.

It has already been confirmed that the Edinburgh Christmas markets will return after they were cancelled last year, along with attractions and an ice rink in the city centre.

However, as coronavirus pandemic is still with us, the popular light switch on event is to be scaled back once again.

Traditionally, Edinburgh hosts a Light Night event that sees priotechniques, live music and Santa making a flying visit. But once again, the event has been stripped back.

But fear not as the city will still be flooded with Christmas lights and visual effects will be on show, as well as the return of the Christmas markets and attractions.

Following the success of the rainbow installation on the Mound in 2020, Edinburgh’s Christmas is working with Edinburgh based artist Hannah Are who will produce a contemporary art installation, illuminating the Mound with cascading geometric snowflakes

This installation will sit alongside Edinburgh’s Christmas tree, donated by the Hordaland County Council in Norway and will replace the traditional Light Night event.

If you still want to enjoy spectacular light shows, Edinburgh Live reported on all the light show events in the city and you can read that here.

When will Edinburgh Christmas light switch on?

While the usual big event has been scaled back, according to Edinburgh City Council, the lights will be switched on on Sunday November 21.

This will cover the Mound, Rose Street, Cockburn Street and Victoria Street, West Parliament Square and City Chambers.

Each neighbourhood will also have Christmas lights and they will be switched on at the times as followed.
