Edinburgh Christmas events you can book and buy tickets for right now

Now that autumn is drawing to a close and winter is rapidly approaching, it's time to look ahead to the Christmas season.

With Covid restrictions more relaxed than they were last year, event organisers are looking to make up for lost time.

As such, there's a whole host of festive things going on in Edinburgh this December.

The city will play host to a number of seasonal celebrations, from light-filled nighttime walks around Edinburgh Zoo and the Botanic Gardens, to live musical events celebrating classic Christmas films.

We've put together a roundup of all the events you should look out for (and can already book your tickets for!) as we approach Christmas 2021.

Edinburgh Zoo’s Christmas Nights

What is it: A "spectacular light trail" that will take guests through the grounds of the zoo as part of a story to "discover the magic of Christmas spirit and Santa’s time at the zoo". Along the trail there will be projections, fairy lights, and more.

Christmas Market - East Princes Street Gardens

What is it: A "traditional" Christmas market right in the centre of the city. After a scaled-back version in 2020 due to the pandemic, visitors will once again be free to browse bespoke gifts and tasty treats while soaking up the festive atmosphere next to Princes Street.

Christmas at the Botanics

What is it: A chance to explore Edinburgh's world-renowned Botanic Gardens with a festive spin. Guests will wander through the gardens after dark, taking in a large variety of "lights and seasonal sounds" - featuring light tunnels, a fire garden, and "larger-than-life" illuminations.

The Snow Queen

What is it: Another year of the Lyceum's famous festive productions, following the successful runs of Wendy & Peter Pan and An Edinburgh Christmas Carol. This year, the theatre is taking on Hans Christian Andersen's wintery classic The Snow Queen in what will surely be a treat for the entire family.

When is it: November 25 2021 - January 2 2022

The Muppet Christmas Carol Live In Concert

What is it: A screening of cult Christmas staple The Muppet Christmas Carol, complete with a live score! The Novello Orchestra, conducted by David Mahoney, will be performing the music to the film while audiences enjoy the Muppets' typically off-the-wall take on the classic festive tale.

When is it: 2 December

RSNO Christmas Concert Featuring The Snowman

What is it: Another festive classic performed by a live orchestra, though this one is a bit closer to home. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra will be playing the music from The Snowman, including the classic 'Walking in the Air'. The film will be screened alongside the music, narrated by Outnumbered star Hugh Dennis.
