Edinburgh Christmas lights switch on 2021: All the displays in the city and how to get tickets

Edinburgh has loads of things to do at Christmas for the family with light displays and shows.

Now we have waved goodbye to Halloween and Bonfire Night, Christmas is just round the corner.

Edinburgh is preparing to turn into a winter wonderland with the return of the Christmas market and winter festival.

The Dome has already put their iconic decorations up, lighting up George Street and from November 19, Princes Street Gardens will be flooded with stalls and attractions.

The light switch on was cancelled last year due to Covid but Edinburgh's light switch on will go ahead, but the iconic Light Night event has been cancelled for another year.

While the light switch on is yet to be confirmed, there are still light shows around Edinburgh to dazzle you this winter.

Here are the light show events in Edinburgh this winter you and the whole family can enjoy.

When is Edinburgh light switch on?

Edinburgh's light switch on will take place on Sunday November 21.

Instead of the spectacular event that sees Santa and pyrotechnics, a contemporary art installation, illuminating the Mound with cascading geometric snowflakes will take place next to the Christmas tree.

Edinburgh light switch on will cover the Mound, Rose Street, Cockburn Street and Victoria Street, West Parliament Square and City Chambers.

Each neighbourhood will also have Christmas lights and they will be switched on at the times as followed.

  • Davidson's Mains virtual switch on 6pm Friday November 26
  • Stenhouse 4pm Tuesday November 30
  • Holy Corner - Eric Lidell Centre 6pm Wednesday December 1
  • Roseburn 4.30pm and Corstorphine Old Parish Church 6.30pm Thursday December 2
  • Ratho Village 6.30pm Friday December
  • Marchmont 4pm Saturday December 4
  • Portobello 6pm Thursday December 9

Christmas at the Botanics

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are launching their light show again this year and they promise it's going to be bigger and better than ever.

Christmas at the Botanics lights up the city oasis with over a million light, festive music and sounds to guide you through a trail.

The Botanics' light show will run from November 25 to January 2.

Edinburgh Zoo

It isn't just humans that can enjoy the festivities as Edinburgh Zoo's Christmas lights sparks up from December 11 to January 2.

The zoo is lit up by a festive trail of lights throughout the zoo, a Santa's workshop and a moonlit penguin rock.

Entry slots available every 15 minutes rom 4.45pm to 7.30pm each day

Castle of Light

The Castle of Light is back with the return of Rex the red lion. (Edinburgh Castle)

From November 14 to January 9, Edinburgh Castle is brought to life with a festive light show.

It will be a great show for kids with projections on the wall with Rex the red lion and his friends to help guide you back from the trail.
