Edinburgh chip shop to hand out 4,000 meals to struggling families during lockdown

An Edinburgh chip shop have decided to give back to their community at a time when many families are struggling.

The St Andrews takeaway in Portobello have warmed the hearts of local residents after announcing they will be handing out 4,000 meal vouchers to children entitled to free school meals.

After being part of the community for years, Bob Jefferson, a spokesperson for the takeaway, explained that they were very conscious that many around them were struggling.

He said: "Most people in the area are our customers, and we are so lucky that we have been able to remain open but so many people have lost their jobs or are struggling.

"We wanted to do something to help, we're part of the community and we wanted to give back so the owner, Harem, came up with the idea."

Launched this week, the initiative has seen St Andrews give 4,000 meal vouchers to the local schools, who will then distribute them out to families in need.

Each voucher entitles the child to one free meal, which can be used at the takeaway at any time.

Bob continued: "We weren't sure if the schools would be happy to take the vouchers but they were so grateful.

"Each child that is entitled to free school meals should get 10 vouchers for the shop."

With his own daughter, Nalia, a pupil at Duddingston Primary, Harem explained that they wanted to support the community during a tough time.

He said: "We know that a lot of our customers are having a tough time. Many have lost their jobs or are furloughed. This is a time for everyone to pull together and we wanted to do our bit to help those families that are most in need."
