Edinburgh chip shop forced to close after 'green waterfall' leaks from ceiling

An Edinburgh chip shop was forced to close after faulty pipe work caused a flood of water to leak through the ceiling.

Staff at #Fish, on Marchmont Road, were greeted by a green waterfall as they opened the takeaway on Sunday.

Manager David Reid, told Edinburgh Live that staff took to social media to try to track down the tenants in the building above their shop.

"We reached out to our large social media following to see if they could help us. They're very good to us, our followers on Instagram and Facebook, they always have an answer to our dramas," explained David.

"Thank god the council have people working on a Sunday. They sent out a facilities manager to turn the water off then we had to just wait and see if the water would stop, which it hadn't before 8pm last night. We had to just leave buckets and pans around the shop under the various areas that it was coming in from."

With the landlord and tenant from the above flat seemingly difficult to track down, David and the owner of the business, Helen Meikle, were left with few options and could only hope that the water would eventually stop and the damage could be assessed.

He said: "One of our customers messaged last night to say the buckets were full but most of the water had ceased trickling into the shop."

With Sunday promising to be a busy night for takings, David, couldn't help but feel frustrated at the awful timing of the incident: "It's just frustrating that such a silly thing can get in the way of one of our busiest nights," he added.

"Everything is wet and damp, the front counter has seen better days but it could have been a lot worse. In truth, we'll probably have to replace ceiling tiles, that's not the end of the world, time will tell really."

David also confirms the shop will be re-open tonight: "We've put the ceiling tiles back in but we'll be open tonight, which is great. I wasn't sure that would be the case this morning but I have to thank the community and Edinburgh Council for giving us guidance because you really just don't know what to do."
