Edinburgh cat owner left heartbroken after beloved pet drowns in neighbour's garden

A heartbroken Edinburgh cat owner is speaking out after her cat Angel tragically drowned in her neighbour's outdoor water butt.

The receptacles are used to store water and are especially popular for watering your plants in the summer months.

But now cat owner Lianne is raising awareness of the danger they pose to pets, after her cat became trapped in one and died.

Lianne, who has been sharing her story online to raise awareness, told Edinburgh Live : "We are all distraught and it's painful knowing it could have been avoided.

Lianne said the water butt had been sitting in her neighbour's garden with no lid on for nearly 30 years.

When her cat went missing she had even searched the area but never suspected the barrel of water.

She added: "It was a big blue drum only half of it was covered.

"We think she lost her footing going over the fence or she tried to climb inside. We checked our neighbour's garden daily but didn't even really notice the drum."
