Edinburgh Castle kitchen porter aimed homophobic abuse at cops trying to get him medical help

A kitchen porter at Edinburgh Castle launched a tirade of homophobic abuse at cops trying to get him to seek medical treatment.

Kenneth Bruce called officers “p**fs” and said he’d see them at a popular gay nightspot in the capital.

Police were called to find Bruce by worried NHS staff but the officer arresting him was told: “Suck my f***ing d***”.

Bruce, 50, appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Wednesday and pled guilty to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner, aggravated by prejudice to sexual orientation.

Fiscal depute Sanah Idrees said an ambulance had been called at 1.41am because Bruce was experiencing “chest pains”.

Ms Idrees said paramedics attending found Bruce’s physical health wasn’t a concern but remained worried about his wellbeing and tried to take him to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The court heard Bruce was abusive during the journey and the paramedics let him out on Leith Street.

Ms Idrees said the paramedics were still concerned about Bruce and called police.

Officers traced Bruce who continued to act in an agitated manner, the court heard.

The prosecutor said Bruce told officers he’d “see them at CC Blooms”, a popular LGBTQ venue.

The court heard Bruce said they could “stick their handcuffs up their a***’s”.

Bruce replied to the officer arresting and charging him with “suck my f***ing d***”, added Ms Idrees.

Defence agent Philip Templeton said his client had been drinking before the incident on May 30 last year. He said Bruce, who has a long-standing issue with depression, had suffered a robbery earlier in the evening when his mobile phone was stolen.

Mr Templeton said Bruce was a kitchen porter at Edinburgh Castle employed by the Ministry of Defence.

Sheriff Adrian Fraser QC told Bruce it had been a “totally unpleasant” incident when “people were trying to help you”. He deferred sentence on Bruce, of the city’s Duddingston area, for six months for him to be of good behaviour.
