Edinburgh Castle Gogar up for sale with £1million price change as owners seek a buyer

It's not often you see properties reduced by a million quid.

However the owners at Edinburgh's stunning Castle Gogar are very keen to find a buyer and have made a significant price change to help things along.

It's still priced at offers over £2.3million, mind you, so I don't think this quite fits into the "bargain property" bracket just yet.

Rettie describe the home, which dates back to the 1600s, as an "immaculately restored seven bedroom castle nestled amongst 3.65 acres, within close proximity to Edinburgh city centre and airport".

It's set over four floors and in addition to the seven bedrooms there's a library, a gym, a sauna, a boot room, a riding arena and some breathtaking gardens. There's also a vaulted crypt but let's not dwell on that.

Rettie say the castle was built in 1625 and was then extended just over 100 years later. In the 19th century Scots Baronial features such as turrets and a tower were added.

The property was owned by the Steel-Maitland family for more than 200 years until the death of the last family member 19 years ago. Since then the castle has undergone a restoration and a number of major improvements.

The agents add: "Internally the castle has been immaculately restored but retains many original features. These include the vaulted crypt (or family room) on the ground floor, turnpike staircases, turrets with arrow slots and battlements.

"The Georgian rooms include a magnificent double bow ended first floor drawing room and beautiful panelled hall and dining room. The refurbishment incorporated everything one could ask for in a luxurious modern home."

The Times reported this week that the landmark property is now on-sale at more than a million pounds cheaper than its asking price from nine years ago. They say it's been listed for sale several times in the 21st century, most recently in 2012.

Andrew Smith, head of country houses at Rettie, said it had attracted interest from across Europe, as well as in the UK.
