Edinburgh Castle and Christmas market closed due to strong winds and heavy rains

Edinburgh Castle and the Christmas market in the capital have been forced to close today.

Strong winds and heavy rain have battered large parts of the country which led to organisers taking the decision to close the popular tourist attractions.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind in the east of the country with travel disruption expected.

Chiefs at Edinburgh Castle apologised for any inconvenience caused after taking the decision to not open at 9.30am.

An Edinburgh Castle statement on Twitter read: "Given the current weather in Edinburgh, unfortunately the castle will not open at 9.30am today, Tues 10 Dec.

"We will continue to assess the situation and will post an update as soon as we hear the castle will open. We apologises for any inconvenience caused."

All rides, the Santa's Grotto and the markets in Princess Gardens will remain closed throughout the morning, however may open later today.

A statement from the organisers read: "Due to the inclement weather currently being experienced in the area, Edinburgh's Christmas will not open this morning.

"All rides, Santa’s Grotto and markets are currently closed."
