Edinburgh carer struck off after making patient vomit and hiding walker out of reach

An Edinburgh carer has been struck off the register after a series of incidents targeting her patients.

Susan Worth was removed from the SSSC register after a series of inappropriate actions against four different residents at the care home, two of which suffered from dementia.

An investigation of the SSSC found Ms Worth to have targeted a particular dementia patient on numerous occasions, calling her both “ungrateful” and “bad”, as well as snatching food from her.

The investigation also stated that Ms Worth had purposely moved the patient’s Zimmer frame out of reach and had made her continue to eat despite being full, which lead the patient to vomit.

After the patient had been sick, Ms Worth was also found to have shouted at them in a cruel manner.

Other infractions included shouting at other residents, and calling them by vile insults such as a “dirty old man” and a “prostitute.”

The council stated they had taken all of the incidents into account when making their decision, which spanned from 2018 to 2020.

Speaking about Ms Worth’s actions, they said:

“Your behaviour is, at its highest, abusive. The behaviour demonstrates a clear lack of compassionate practise for the service users in your care and is indicative of significant attitudinal and values issues, therefore the behaviour is harder to remediate.

"Your behaviour is serious and persistent and is such that it is fundamentally incompatible with professional registration.

"There is an ongoing risk to public protection and a reasonable person in possession of all the information, would consider the reputation of the profession to be damaged if you were to remain able to practise without restriction.”
