Edinburgh carer pretended to be a boss and gave someone a fake job reference

A carer in Edinburgh has been removed from the register after lying about being a supervisor and giving a fake reference to help someone get a job.

Cherno Dibba pretended to be a supervisor and faked a reference for someone applying for a role as a carer looking after vulnerable adults. He was only rumbled when he went for a job himself in the sector sometime later.

When applying for a job in Edinburgh, he was asked if he had any previous experience in a care setting and answered 'no'. But bosses later checked the records and found his faked reference before confronting him.

The Scottish Social Services Council found that Dibba showed no remorse for his actions and did not believe he had done anything wrong and so was removed him from its register.

The incident took place June 18, 2020, when Dibba provided a false reference in support of the application for the position of carer and commented positively on the candidate's practice while stating that he had been her supervisor when this was not the case.

The SSSC found Dibba to be impaired and wrote: "Social service workers must be truthful, honest and trustworthy.

"You provided a false reference in support of ZZ’s practice. You wrote in the reference that you were ZZ’s supervisor at a job she held in the care sector, when this was not the case.

"This behaviour was dishonest, in that you have sought to mislead a social services employer as to your professional relationship with ZZ and knowledge of her suitability for employment.

"Such behaviour also undermines safer recruitment practices and raises concerns as to your values and suitability to work as part of a caring and responsible profession."

They added: "The behaviour occurred before you registered with the SSSC, however, it is serious. You did not list any social care employment on your application for employment with Renaissance Care (No 5) Limited and you advised at the interview that you did not have any previous experience working in a social care setting.

"After being asked by your employer about the reference you had provided for ZZ, you acknowledged you had not worked with ZZ as her supervisor.

"You, therefore, were not in a position to comment on her suitability for employment. Your actions had the potential to put vulnerable individuals at risk of harm.

"Pretending to have worked in a social service setting as a supervisor and pretending to have a good working knowledge of someone’s practice is dishonest."

They also wrote: "You have demonstrated no insight into the behaviour and have failed to recognise the potential consequences of your actions. You appear to deny any wrongdoing, which is also of concern."

Finally adding: "Assurance cannot be taken that the behaviour would not be repeated in the future. Your behaviour is a fundamental breach of the Codes of Practice, and calls into question your integrity, values and character.

Cherno Dibba has been removed from the SSSC register and Renaissance Care has been approached for comment.
