Edinburgh care home resident shares her secrets to living to 102

An Edinburgh care home resident who turned 102 this month has shared her secrets to a long and happy life.

On August 9, Winnie celebrated her birthday at the Lauder Lodge care home near Portobello Beach.

Edinburgh Evening News reports how Winnie shared that one of her secrets to living so long is dancing.

Other past times that she credits for her longevity and happiness are "reading, spending her weekends with friends and enjoying a pot of tea and a slice of cake."

Book worm Winnie enjoys the book club at the care home and has read all of the books at the facility's library, marking each one with her initials after she finishes it.

She celebrated her birthday with an afternoon tea party surrounded by her pals from the home, allowing her to dance to her favourite music dating back from the 1930s.

Nicole Anderson told the paper: “Winnie is a well-loved and popular resident at Lauder Lodge, and it was fantastic to help her celebrate this incredible milestone with her friends and family here at the care home.

“Here at Lauder Lodge, everything we do is focused around our ethos of ensuring residents live active and fulfilling lives, so we always like to celebrate important milestones – and Winnie’s 102nd birthday was no exception. It was lovely to raise a glass to Winnie on her special day.”’

Born on August 9, 1919, Winnie grew up in Leith and worked as a dressmaker at Jenners. She reportedly spent her lunch breaks dancing in Marine Gardens where she met her husband Pete.

They shared three children together as well as four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Winnie later became a teacher in dressmaking before taking over a family-run shop in Canonmills.
