Edinburgh cafe praised for offering free coffee to immigrants on election day

An Edinburgh cafe is being praised online for putting up a sign supporting immigrants and offering them a free drink.

Wellington Coffee on George Street in Edinburgh city centre stuck a poster on their wall that read:

"Dear immigrants, thank you.

"We're sorry if you live, work and pay taxes in this country but don't get to vote.

"Without your work and custom this shop would not exist - to show our appreciation your coffee today is free."

Cafe owner Steven Croall shared a picture of the sign on Twitter (Twitter: @Superior_Stevie)

Barista Steven Croall shared a picture of the sign on Twitter and said:

"So this is happening in Wellington Coffee in Edinburgh today! If you immigrant living and working in Edinburgh come along, get a free coffee and know that this shop values your continued support and custom."

The tweet and photo of the sign - put up on the day of the General Election - have since been retweeted over 200 times, with the majority of replies full of praise for the cafe's gesture.

One German woman living in the UK said that "a gesture like this means so much", while another Twitter user said: "we need more of this, everywhere."

Wellington Coffee is owned by  Jonathan Sharp, who also owns also Kilimanjaro Coffee, Thomas J Walls, Blackwood Coffee, Project Coffee and Press Coffee across the capital - all of their shops participated in the campaign!

The majority of EU citizens aren't permitted to vote in today's General Election.

To vote in the General Election on 12 December you must:

  • be registered to vote
  • be 18 or over on the day of the election (‘polling day’)
  • be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
  • be resident at an address in the UK (or a British citizen living abroad who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years)
  • not be legally excluded from voting

Only citizens with British, Irish, Cypriot or Maltese citizenship who meet the criteria above will be able to mark a ballot paper.

Edinburgh Live have reached out to Steven Croall for comment.
