On Thursday, the First Minister emphasised the importance of the latest advice, and asked the public to only leave home if they really have to, as the Omicron variant becomes dominant.

Speaking on social media, the cafe explained they had chosen to shut now and reopen when they can.

They said on Thursday: "With today's advice from Holyrood being to only leave the house if you have to, we've made the decision to close early for Christmas.

"We didn't make this decision lightly, and we're sorry we won't see any of you again until 2022.

"We'll back before you know it. Don't eat too much chocolate in the mean time!"

It comes as the new coronavirus strain is expected to cause a "tsunami" of cases in the coming days, with nearly 6,000 alone reported on Thursday.

The First Minister is due to speak again on Friday in another public update.
